Conserve your energy!

If cooler temperatures outside often mean higher heating bills for you, here are some simple ideas on how to keep costs down.

Keep warmth under control

  • Turn down your thermostat slightly, so that you hardly notice the difference. Doing this could cut your heating bill by up to 10%.
  • Close doors to unused rooms so that only a small space is heated.
  • Draw your curtains at night to stop heat from escaping.
  • Nylon brush seals for letterboxes and covers for keyholes will stop the draughts.
  • Get rid of old or damaged electric blankets, as they can be hazardous. It was reported that they are responsible for thousands of house fires all over Europe each year. Instead, invest in good quality bedding, which incorporates far-infrared ceramic fibres that provide safe, natural warmth.

Switches and buttons

  • Always turn lights off as soon as you leave a room and replace your bulbs with energy efficient ones. They use less electricity and last longer than ordinary bulbs.
  • Leaving VCRs, DVD players, stereos and televisions on standby still uses electricity. Switch them off completely.

In the kitchen

  • Allow cooked food to cool down to room temperature before putting it in the fridge or freezer.
  • Select low temperatures when using dishwashers and washing machines and always do a full load if there is no half-load/economy programme available.
  • Only boil enough water in the kettle for what you need, making sure you cover the element.
  • Keep the lids on pans when cooking.

In the bathroom

  • Ensure that taps are not left dripping and put plugs in when using sinks.
  • Have a shower rather than a bath – it uses half the amount of water.
