Do you want to give up smoking? Then you should read this…

Paint stripper, ammonia (used in products such as toilet cleaner), lighter fuel, chemicals used in mothballs, poison used in gas chambers, rocket fuel, formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies), carbon monoxide (found in car exhaust fumes) and hundreds of additional toxins are present in every cigarette. But what happens when you add fire to this deadly concoction?

When a cigarette is lit, these substances merge to form over 4000 chemical combinations, which are then drawn into the smoker's lungs with each inhalation.

The number of smokers in Europe is on the increase due to aggressive, international marketing by the tobacco industry. Smoking rates are three times higher among poor people AND they have three times as many health problems. One in two long-term smokers will die prematurely as a result of smoking. It is no wonder that the World Health Organisation has called tobacco use, “a public health disaster”.

If you are a non-smoker, you probably have family members and friends who smoke. There are about 215 million people above the age of 15 across 48 European countries who smoke on a regular basis*. That's about 30% of the total population across this region. We all know about the dangers of smoking, the expense and the anti-social effects such as bad breath, smelly clothes, a rasping cough and breathlessness after running for a short distance; so what can we do to support ourselves or others during the ‘giving up' process?

  • Nutrition
Take vitamin supplements on a regular basis. Breathing in tobacco smoke depletes our bodies of these vital nutrients.
  • Environment
Drink plenty of water. Keep well hydrated to avoid mood swings and the onset of headaches.
  • Rest & Relaxation
Get plenty of good quality sleep. This will help prevent bouts of irritability and will make you feel refreshed every morning.
  • Fitness
Maintain regular exercise. Smokers will quickly notice improvements in lung capacity after a few days of aerobic activity.
